Springfield Police Officer Found Innocent of Fraud and Attempted Larceny
Officer Re-Instated With Back Pay And Saved From A Possible 20 Year Sentence
A Springfield police officer, with 20 years of service, was found not guilty of charges of fraud and attempted larceny. These charges were the result of an alleged scheme linked to the back pay the officer sought after a car accident. The defendant later submitted disability vouchers seeking approximately $23,000 in back sick pay. The Attorney General's Office called numerous witnesses including several members from the Internal Investigative Unit of the Springfield Police Department - all of whom testified against the defendant. Nevertheless, Attorney Raipher D. Pellegrino was able to effectively cross-examine each and every government witness to build, piece-by-piece the defendant's story, on which the jury relied when finding him not guilty.
Result: The defendant was suspended without pay for nearly two years awaiting trial and as a result of being found not guilty, Attorney Raipher D. Pellegrino was able to successfully collect all back pay, insurance benefits and the defendant's reinstatement to the police force. If the defendant had been convicted, he would have faced incarceration.
